Testing a Point Null Hypothesis: The Irreconcilability of P Values and Evidence
نویسنده
چکیده
The problem of testing a point null hypothesis (or a "small interval" null hypothesis) isconsidered. Of interest is the relationship between the P value (or observed significance level) and conditional nd Bayesian measures of evidence against he null hypothesis. Although one might presume that a small P value indicates the presence of strong evidence against he null, such is not necessarily the case. Expanding on earlier work [especiafly Edwards, Lindman, and Savage (1963) and Dickey (1977)], it is shown that actual evidence against a null (as measured, say, by posterior probability or comparative likelihood) can differ by an order of magnitude from the P value. For instance, data that yield a P value of .05, when testing a normal mean, result in a posterior probability of the null of at least .30 for any objective prior distribution. ("Objective" here means that equal prior weight is given the two hypotheses and that the prior is symmetric and nonincreasing away from the null; other definitions of"objective" will be seen to yield qualitatively similar esults.) The overall conclusion is that P values can be highly misleading measures of the evidence provided by the data against he null hypothesis.

Testing a Point Null Hypothesis against One-Sided for Non Regular and Exponential Families: The Reconcilability Condition to P-values and Posterior Probability
In this paper, the reconcilability between the P-value and the posterior probability in testing a point null hypothesis against the one-sided hypothesis is considered. Two essential families, non regular and exponential family of distributions, are studied. It was shown in a non regular family of distributions; in some cases, it is possible to find a prior distribution function under which P-va...

We place the paper [Berger-Sellke] By Berger and Sellke in context of the discussion about the validity of p-values and alternative methods for quantifying evidence against a point null hypothesis. 1. Prologue: Quantifying Evidence against a Point null hypothesis Fisher's p-values are everywhere in empirical science. Quoting a recent provocative paper [1] which addressed the (ir)reproducibility...

T his paper is to examine the mean reverting properties of inflation rates for Iran’s 25 provinces over the period from 1990:4 to 2017:7. To the end, we use various conventional univariate linear and non-linear unit root tests, as well as quantile unit root test by Koenker and Xiao (2004). Results of conventional unit root tests indicate that the null hypothesis of the unit root test...

Background: This study tested the null hypothesis that nonoperatively treated patients would not show disease progression of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) over time according to median nerve distal motor latency (DML) on two electrodiagnostic tests. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed sixty-two adult nonoperatively treated patients who were diagnosed with CTS confirmed by a minimum of...
